Media reports confirm that on November 5, 2025, Zohran Mamdani made history by becoming the youngest mayor of the largest city in the United States.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, won 948,202 votes, or 50.6% of the total, becoming the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history and the first person of South Asian descent to lead the city.
President Trump has been backing former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo since the beginning of the mayoral race, and threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City if Democrat Zohran Mamdani won.
However, the city’s more than 8.4 million residents rejected this threat. Mamdani’s ambitious vision of the town attracted widespread public support, including plans for affordable housing, New York City’s first universal childcare program, free city buses, and a rent freeze for one million rent-stabilised tenants.
International political commentators have described the victory as a significant blow to President Trump’s popularity and influence in Democratic strongholds.
