After Sohran Mamdani easily won the mayoral election to become New York’s first Muslim mayor of South Asian descent, opponents of the Washington, D.C., Republican Party have questioned Mamdani’s US citizenship.
President Trump has also threatened to withhold federal funding for New York City if Mamdani wins, and some Republican lawmakers have called for an investigation into Mamdani’s naturalisation process and have called for his US citizenship to be revoked and his deportation.
Sohran Mamdani, 34, a native of Uganda, has been accused of falsely claiming to be a communist and engaging in “terrorist” activities without evidence.
However, Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, immigrated to the United States at the age of seven in 1998 and became a US citizen in 2018. To become a US citizen, adults must have lived in the country continuously as a lawful permanent resident for five years, or three years if married to a US citizen.
