US President Donald Trump has said he wants to acquire Greenland for US national security.
President Trump made these comments to the media yesterday (22) after appointing a new representative for Greenland, Republican Governor of Louisiana Jeff Landry.
The statement on behalf of Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has angered Denmark, and Copenhagen has summoned the US ambassador to explain President Trump’s views.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Friedrich Nielsen had said regarding President Trump’s statement, “The appointment of a special representative does not change anything for us. We determine our own future.” Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, and its territorial integrity must be respected.
Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has enjoyed broad autonomy since 1979. Still, defense and foreign policy are under Danish control, and President Trump attempted to buy the mineral-rich Greenland during his first term. President Trump’s recent national security strategy, along with his military incursion into Venezuela, appears to be seeking greater control over the Western Hemisphere.
