On December 11, US President Donald Trump announced a $1 million (£750,000) visa scheme to be introduced from February.
Dubbed a ‘gold card’ scheme, it will allow wealthy foreigners to quickly obtain US visas.
President Trump said on social media that he was targeting high-level professionals and that the country needed productive people.
The scheme has been heavily criticised by Democrats, who say Trump is unfairly favouring the wealthy.
However, the Trump administration has now suspended immigration applications from people from 19 countries in Africa and the Middle East, and the government has also halted all decisions on refugee applications.
