President Donald Trump has announced plans to take legal action against the BBC, alleging that the broadcaster misled viewers by editing one of his speeches for use in a Panorama documentary.
Trump’s legal team has issued an ultimatum demanding a full retraction of the documentary by November 14, 2024, or the BBC will face a lawsuit seeking $1 billion (£760 million) in damages.
According to leaked information reported by The Telegraph, the controversial documentary featured edited footage that allegedly portrayed Trump as explicitly calling for the storming of the US Capitol following his election defeat on January 6, 2021.
In response to the escalating controversy, BBC Chairman Samir Shah has indicated the organisation’s willingness to apologise for the editorial errors in the documentary. The fallout has led to significant leadership changes, with News Chief Executive Deborah Turness and Director General Tim Davie both resigning from their positions.
