November 4 — As New Yorkers cast their ballots for mayor today, President Donald Trump has threatened to slash federal funding to the nation’s largest city if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani emerges victorious.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump said that if “communist candidate” Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election, he would be “very reluctant” to provide federal funds beyond “the bare minimum” to what he called “my beloved first home,” arguing that “a communist would have zero chance of success or even survival for the great city.”
According to recent polling, Democrat Zohran Mamdani leads the race with 46.1 percent support, followed by independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
If elected, the 34-year-old Mamdani would make history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor. The self-described democratic socialist has energized progressive voters with an ambitious platform that includes free childcare, fare-free public transit, and a citywide rent freeze. His signature proposal for expanded rent-regulated housing would impact approximately one million New Yorkers.
The president’s threat to withhold federal funding raises questions about the legality and practical implications of such a move, as New York City receives billions in federal dollars annually for transportation, housing, education, and public safety programs.
