If you needed a reason to laugh, the 2023 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards provided it with a collection of hilarious images that capture animals in their unexpected, playful, and downright hilarious moments.
The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, founded in 2015 by photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam, have become a global sensation for blending humour, photography, and conservation. The 2023 competition received submissions from photographers from all over the world. The finalists were selected from thousands of entries and brought together 41 images that are sure to elicit laughter.
The photos are all hilarious, featuring owls, bewildered bears, silhouetted fish, and other wildlife caught in amusing situations. Each of these photos gave us a glimpse into the wild’s sense of humour and reminded us that nature has a silly side, too.
However, the competition is not just about making us laugh. The People’s Choice Award, sponsored by Affinity Photo, gave the public the chance to vote for their favourite image and awarded one lucky photographer £500 (approximately $600). Even better, the award helped raise awareness and support for the Whitley Fund for Nature. This UK-based conservation charity works to protect wildlife and ecosystems worldwide.
The 2023 judging panel included a star-studded mix of wildlife experts and celebrities, including TV presenter Kate Humble, comedian Hugh Dennis, and renowned photographers DaisyGilardini and Will Burrard-Lucas. The judges had the difficult task of selecting from dozens of brilliant images that told unique, humorous stories.
They also took a considerable risk in the world with the announcement of their victory on 23 November 2023
